Shaken Awake

I was shaken awake at 6am
by a grumble and thump of thunder.
Torrential rain was clattering
on the window sill, the garden and road,
as heavy as a shower of Agincourt arrows.
Sudden flash – the lightning was all
around me. I jumped, a child again.
The thunder applauded and the rain
chuckled. I lay awake listening,
so glad to be warm and dry in my bed;
how soothing the sound or heavy rain, how nice
to be taken back to childhood
when I listened to the rain and was
so glad to be warm and dry in my bed.
